birth photography

Apparenlty, I've been living under a rock... I hadn't realized, or thought much about, the idea of hiring someone to take photographs of your birthing experience.

My son was born 7 years ago... I purchased a digital camera a week before the big day and nobody knew how to use it... so the pictures I have of the day I became a mommy for the first time aren't... great.

Looking back I wish I would have hired a professional photographer.
Heck, I had about a dozen people in the room anyway... I don't think 1 more person would have made a difference... but I would have had beautiful once in a lifetime moments captured by someone who knew what they were doing.  Hindsight, right?

What are your thoughts on birth photography?
Would you hire a stranger to be there on your special day... are you lucky enough to have a family member or friend that is handy with a camera?

If you're a photographer, is this something you would like to do?

Personally, yes... If I were to have another baby, I would seriously consider hiring someone to take professional photos of the birth.  I would do my research and I would prefer to get to know them a bit before the big day, though.

As a photographer... yes, I would also love to be able to capture those moments for someone else.
With a regular 9-5 job, though... I don't think I'd be able to make the jump to birth photography... since mother nature doesn't always stick to OUR schedules, right!?

  1. I would definitely hire someone. I am not sure if you have graced the forums of Clickinmoms yet, but there is lots of discussion and an entire board devoted to the topic! Your photographs are beautiful, you have such wonderful talent!

  3. Personally, I wouldn't hire someone. All of my birth experiences have been just the medical personnel, my husband and me. Most of our children have been born when we weren't close enough for family to be there anyway, and I've never wanted them there. But, I say to each their own.

  4. I think the pictures would be a wonderful thing to have! I would need for the photographer to be someone that I knew though! This is actually a wonderful idea!

  7. Love love love them. I would so love to photograph a friends or family members birth. I agree with the meeting them before and getting to know them too. I would feel like i was intruding if i didn't 'know' them beforehand. I wish i had some throughout all 3 of mine, hey.. there's always next time! ;)
